Introduction
As an American painter, I am on a lifelong quest for artistic evolution. Driven by constant growth, my artistic journey explores life experiences and personification, embodied in two distinct series: "Tree" and "Contemporary Figure." My objective is to visually explore creativity through my subconscious and absolute realities, expand existing knowledge on consciousness and creativity from an artistic perspective, and discover ways to create thought-provoking art for the future.
Tree Series
In the "Tree" series, fundamental elements of art such as space, form, and color are celebrated, merging emotion and consciousness through autonomous drawing techniques. I utilize expressive techniques to create a visual language using flat color shapes and expressive lines to evoke emotional responses from the viewer. Recent works explore spirituality and color harmonies, accompanied by abstract poetry, deepening the narrative.
The Contemporary Figure Series
In the "Contemporary Figure" series, I draw inspiration from the elegance and symbolism of the human form, influenced by the flowing lines of Art Nouveau. Symmetrical techniques breathe new life into each figure, creating a silent dialogue that examines subconscious thoughts and narratives. This series invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of the human experience.
My creative process begins with gestural drawings based on real models. I strip away details like arms, legs, and facial features, arriving at a simplified motif. Employing symmetry, this motif is flipped to generate a second version and then positioned to create an overlapping third version, each unique. Despite their differences, these “motifs” represent interconnected aspects of a single “entity” integrating various layers of reality with diverse states of consciousness. Subsequently, incorporating the visual narrative encourages the exploration of diverse influences, internal dialogues, and the contemplation of complex identity and spirituality within my contemporary art thought process.
Research
My current research examines art as a bridge between past, present, and future personifications through layers of finite, random, and infinite temporal duration. These layers offer valuable insights into the intricate workings of human thought and emotion within the context of the visual art thought process and qualia. At the core of my investigation lies the "Fein Wheel of Visual Art Thought Process," a complex three-layer diagram that maps both visible and intrinsic variables associated with creativity, ultimately influencing my artistic practice. This ongoing study explores absolute realities, consciousness, and identity, all contributing to a deeper understanding of art, creativity, and the human experience.
My artwork aligns with my research, integrating aspects of emotion and consciousness (from the Tree series) with elements of dialogue, identity, and absolute realities (associated with the figure). Both series share a common thread in their application of diverse painting methodologies, including unconventional techniques like manipulating the canvas through construction and deconstruction and creating light installations on or under the canvas.
Current Work
Living and working within Eastern culture for two decades has profoundly influenced my artistic journey. As early as 2004, I began incorporating Eastern spiritual influences into my figurative paintings, transforming them from simple representations to works rich with complex narratives. This exploration culminated in 2023 during my residency at the TESA Creative Center in Taipei, Taiwan. There, I created the series titled "Angels and Deities," which explores the interplay between Eastern and Western spiritual philosophies through the human form. This series exemplifies my ongoing pursuit of pushing boundaries in contemporary figurative art. By manipulating form and achieving a harmonious balance between process and meaning, I invite viewers on a journey of discovery, encouraging them to contemplate the intricate facets of identity and spirituality within my work, while identifying the diverse influences that have shaped it. Ultimately, I hope viewers will interpret these works with their own narratives, drawing upon their personal experiences and perspectives.
Conclusion
Having exhibited my works across three continents, I maintain an active professional practice, staying updated with current trends and fostering connections with peers, academics, and fellow artists. Philanthropy holds a significant place in my journey, with a longstanding commitment to donating artworks to impactful charities such as Arts for Hearts, Lifeline, and the Make a Wish Foundation.
This journey represents an unwavering commitment to the evolution of art and its potential to be a catalyst for positive change in our ever-evolving world. My goal is to create art that not only complements my research but also stands as a testament to the symbiotic relationship between art and humanity.
