Kintsugi is a centuries-old Japanese art of repairing broken pottery and transforming it into a new work of art with gold, The name of the technique is derived from the words “Kin” (golden) and “tsugi” (joinery), which translate to mean “golden repair.” The scars and cracks of the broken ceramic become the focus and turn the object into something unique and exquisite.

The practice is related to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which calls for seeing beauty in the flawed or imperfect. The repair method was also born from the Japanese feeling of mottainai, not to waste and mushin,
the acceptance of change.

My father moved from Phoenix Arizona back to Canton Ohio in 2019. Being out west for over 10 years he accumulated a very equiste collection of Native American pottery. He decided to ship each piece separately through Fed Ex - upon arrival in Ohio most pieces were severely damaged and broken. In 2020 I used kintsugi technique to repair each piece giving them new life.
